Signing in and out

Colab has no passwords. There are two ways in: get a 6-digit code by e-mail, or press Sign in with Microsoft (if your organisation has turned it on). An administrator must have added your account first. If you do not have an account yet, contact your organisation’s administrator.

Sign in with an e-mail code

  1. Open Colab in your browser. You will see the Sign in page
  2. Type your e-mail in the Work email field and press Send code
  3. Open your e-mail — a 6-digit code will have been sent to you
  4. Type the code in the Enter the code window. Once all 6 digits are in, it is checked automatically (or press Sign in)

Good to know

  • A code is valid for 5 minutes. The screen counts down under Expires in
  • You can get the code wrong 5 times. The screen shows … tries left; after that the code stops working and you need a new one
  • Ask for a new code with Send a new code. You need to wait about 1 minute between requests
  • Typed the wrong e-mail? Press Change email to go back and fix it

Sign in with Microsoft

This button only appears for organisations whose administrator has connected Colab to Microsoft (Entra ID).

  1. On the Sign in page, press Sign in with Microsoft
  2. Sign in with your Microsoft work account, following Microsoft’s steps
  3. You are taken back to Colab and signed in

Some organisations require everyone to sign in with Microsoft. In that case the screen says Use your Microsoft work account, and e-mail codes are only for administrators (administrators: email code). If anyone else asks for an e-mail code, they are told this organisation signs in with Microsoft.

If signing in with Microsoft fails, the screen tells you why, for example:

  • There is no Colab account for that Microsoft account — ask an administrator to add you first
  • That Microsoft account belongs to another organisation — check that you signed in with the right work account
  • Finish the Microsoft sign-in in the browser where you started it — do not switch browsers or apps halfway through

How long you stay signed in

After you sign in, that device stays signed in for as long as your organisation allows. The default is 24 hours. When the time is up, you are taken back to the sign-in page; just ask for a new code as usual.

Administrators can switch an account off. If your account is switched off, you are signed out on every device and cannot sign in until someone lets you back in. All your work data stays intact.

Sign out

  1. Click your profile picture in the top-right corner and choose Log out
  2. Or press Log out at the bottom of the left-hand menu

Always sign out when you use a device that other people share.

If something goes wrong

  • No account has that email — this e-mail has no account yet. Check the spelling, or ask an administrator to add you
  • This account has been switched off — contact your administrator
  • This organisation only accepts sign-ins from its own email domains — use your company e-mail instead of a personal one
